R-Word (1)Manufactured by R-tools Technology Data Recovery, the range of R-recovery tools has been around since 2000, yet it managed to escape our attention since very recently. Reviewed today is a highly specialized application aimed to repair corrupted DOC files created by Microsoft Word.

Performance

R-Word (2)The first thing that comes to our attention is that R-Word does not deal with any sort of missing files. Deleted documents, formatted disks and similar stuff remain far beyond the abilities of this modest tool. As such, we had to modify our regular testing schedule to include some (deliberately corrupted) DOC files and see what’s going on.

Unfortunately, R-Word was quite disappointing even with what it’s supposed to do. It only supports legacy DOC formats produced by Microsoft Word versions 97, 2000, XP, and 2003. With the oldest version of Word being available on our test bench being Office 2007 (with the newest Office 2010 available alongside for testing the very modern office recovery tools), we had to resort to saving the documents in compatibility mode. Sure enough, R-Word was able to repair minor corruption, while extracted a certain amount of usable information from badly damaged document – but is it really the point?

Value

R-Word (3)Priced at $68.99, R-Word can only repair existing documents produced by legacy versions of Microsoft Word. No support for deleted files or formatted disks is available, and no word on supporting Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010 formats. The tool urgently needs updating. However, as that didn’t happen in the last five years or so since the release of Office 2007, we can safely conclude that the development of R-Word has been halted, and the tool itself discontinued. As such, we’d advice against purchasing it.

Alternatives? Diskinternals Word Recovery is available for only $11 more ($79.95), and is a much more comprehensive solution. Diskinternals Word Recovery can locate and recover deleted documents, restore Word files located on formatted, corrupted and inaccessible disks, and includes the company’s proprietary signature-search algorithm enabling surefooted recovery from all sorts of bad media. All that, and the ability to repair Word 2007/2010 formats makes Diskinternals Word Recovery a clear winner.

For a few dollars more, DiskInternals offers a comprehensive Office Recovery suite that, in addition to Word documents, can recover Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations and a variety of documents produced by other Microsoft Office and OpenOffice products.
